Annotated Bibliography란?
Annotated bibliography(주석 달린 문헌 목록)는 책이나 기사, 문서 등의 Citation(인용) 목록이다. 인용된 각 소스마다 보통 150단어 내외의 소개문을 포함한다. 이 소개문은 서술적이거나 평가적인 단락 또는 Annotation(주석)으로 이뤄져 있다. Annotation의 목적은 인용된 소스의 관련성, 정확성 및 품질을 독자에게 알리는 것이다.
초록(Abstracts)과의 차이
초록은 학술지 기사의 시작 부분이나 정기 간행물 등에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 순수한 요약문이다. 반면 Annotated bibliography는 서술적이고 비판적이며, 저자의 관점, 권위, 표현의 명확성과 적절성을 설명할 수 있다.
작성 과정
Annotated bibliography를 작성하려면 간단명료한 해설과 분석, 그리고 질 좋은 도서관에서의 리서치 등의 다양한 지적 기술이 필요하다.
일단, 당신이 선택한 주제에 대한 유용한 정보나 아이디어를 포함할 수 있는 책, 정기 간행물 및 문서에서 인용구를 찾아서 기록하라. 실제 항목을 간략히 조사하고 검토하라. 그런 다음에는 주제에 대한 다양한 관점을 제공하는 작품들을 선택하라.
책, 기사, 문서 등을 인용하되 각 자료의 유형에 알맞은 인용법을 사용하라.
해당 자료의 범위와 중심 주제를 요약하는 간략한 주석을 작성하라. 이 주석은 (a) 저자의 권위나 배경을 평가하거나 (b) 의도한 독자층에 대해 코멘트하거나 (c) 인용한 다른 자료와 대조 또는 비교를 하거나 (d) 해당 자료가 당신의 Bibliography 주제에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 설명하는 문장을 하나 이상 포함해야 한다.
책, 기사, 또는 문서 등을 비판적으로 살피기
해당 자료들을 비판적으로 평가하고 분석하는 방법은 정보 출처를 비판적으로 분석하는 방법을 참조하라. 저자의 배경과 관점에 대한 정보를 얻고 싶다면 적절한 전기적(biographical) 참고 자료와 책 논평 자료를 찾을 때 참조 데스크에 문의하여 도움을 요청하라.

Annotated Bibliography 기입 예시
다음 예시는 APA 스타일(7th edition)을 따른 것이다.
Waite, L., Goldschneider, F., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51, 541-554.
The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.
